The first site
for Rugbyology... the
study, science, or theory of the sport of Rugby
Union.
Welcome fellow Rugbyologists.
Rugbyology.org is an independent website designed as a resource
to fill a vital gap in the system by developing and passing ideas
from thinkers to doers. It is to allow the game to benefit
through the development of constructive, proactive ideas and
information on any element of the game. It intends to act as an
intermediary or filter providing access between the supply of
ideas and the demand for them. It may help bridge gaps between
those who have ideas and advice to contribute and those with the
ability to act, thus making a real difference.
This is dependent, in the first instance, on the good will of the
game's thinking supporters in contributing their expertise to
this fledgling project. We have a ball, but need a team to run
with it.
Rugbyology.org, having just kicked off, is looking to achieve its
aims by building a community for all Rugby thinkers for the good
of the game, primarily through its forums. These are for
beneficial, focused, constructive and vigorous but civil
discussion of ideas and information on any element of the game.
They are not for discussion of specific matches, players,
officials or match reporting unless relevant to the above.
The essential premise of this site is the need for a better
rational approach for developing the game. One that more
efficiently utilizes the game's human resource. One that
places the emphasis on the proactive rather than reactive, thus
greatly reducing the opportunity for unintended consequences.
The irbcoaching.com newsletter (circulation >30,000) is
running a promotion for the site. We are looking to create
further such strategic alliances with interested parties. Any
suggestions readers may have for developing such partnerships
would be appreciated. We require further contacts with Rugby
authorities. We are knocking on doors, but lack an invitation. We
welcome any relevant contacts any of you would be kind enough to
point us towards. Please contact us here.
The field and the ball awaits. The task is to form the team and
inform the authorities.
The first pioneers to venture into
this site will probably be wondering what this is about, how
serious an undertaking it is and who is behind it. This is my
personal statement as to what I would like it to be and why I
started it. I should point out that I am not affiliated to any
Rugby organizations or related commercial ventures, but am just a
follower of the game. I would like this site and its forums to
not partake in the regionalism that often occurs elsewhere. To
that end I ask forum participants to focus on the message and not
on the messenger.
I decided to create a dedicated Rugbyology site and forum because
none, that I was aware of, existed. There is Rugbyological
discussion, but sparsely scattered over a wide area, with
generally a minority interest on most sites and often
specialized, such as just coaching or officiating. I felt the
game could benefit by concentrating this activity on one site in
a cross disciplinary manner, with all Rugbyologists included. The
environment for such discussion is also not always encouraging.
Here, the intention is to create a constructive environment, so I
would appreciate your bearing this in mind and post with
care.
So what is it? The Rugbyology.org FAQ fleshes out the type of
material deemed relevant. It is not exhaustive and if you have
further ideas for it, please contact us.
Who will benefit? Firstly, the game. Secondly, Rugbyologists of
all types. Amateurs, such as myself, being in the majority, will
probably be here. Players, coaches, administrators, officials,
fans. Anyone who appreciates chewing over beneficial ideas. The
intention is for those with the ability to act to be informed.
This is something to bear in mind when posting. If each word is
delivered as if it is a presentation to someone who can do
something about it, the tone should be about right. Ideally I
would like the forum to achieve some credibility in this way.
The term "Rugbyology" came to me over six years ago. It
described my particular interest in the game. Rugby Union's
complexity and flexibility is well suited to this type of
analysis and conjecture. My personal interest is towards the
theoretical and it is this, in particular, that is not well
catered for. By comparison, what may be called "Applied
Rugbyology", such as coaching, training and playing advice
is. Therefore, it is likely this site will be predominantly
theoretical.
We may be few, but perhaps the quality of our thoughts can carry
weight. Even just as a hobby Rugbyology has merit, so why not
join and one way or the other be a part of a little project that
is a big idea?

A message from the site author,
"The Rugbyologist"
Rugbyology.org
has just kicked off.
As such it is looking for people
to develop a community of rugby thinkers to benefit the game,
primarily through the forums. Is this you?
"Just because a message may
not be received... doesn't mean that it wasn't worth
sending."
Rugbyology.org is not brought about
by Rugby Union authorities. It is not a pressure group. It is not
motivated by nor does it have any commercial aspirations.
